Development

A further burden on the marine ecological system is caused by the increase in tourism and the massive development of coastal facilities built for the use of holidaymakers.

As a result, the living and breeding grounds of coastal dwellers such as turtles and seals have been damaged. Of the hundreds of colonies of monk seals scattered along the Mediterranean shores (including at Rosh Hanikra), only a few remain, with some 350 individuals living mainly along the Aegean coast and on the beaches of Morocco, Algeria and the Canary Islands.
